A stone church was built in 1845 and became San Agustin Metropolitan Cathedral. But in 1945, the said church was ruined during the American liberation. The first Archbishop was James T.G. Hayes. Because of the determination of Archbishop Hayes the church was rebuilt. It is the home of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro. If you are going to visit the Cathedral take time to notice its century old stained glass.

Can you see the nice-looking taxi in this picture? Most of the taxi companies in Cagayan de Oro are using Toyota Altis cars. Each time we went out, we usually ride a taxi because we are living almost 5 kilometers away from the City. We always pick Altis because it’s comfortable and it has a good air-conditioning. Sometimes to our dismay taxi drivers refuse to carry passengers especially if it is not within the city proper. They will not use the taxi meter and instead give you a fixed amount or we call it “pakyaw” which has higher rate than using a regular meter.

Things have definitely changed here in Cagayan de Oro. We can really feel that the City is really booming. Plaza Divisoria is a park devoted to local and national heroes. The City government developed the park and placed colorful street lights and more benches. There is also a wide screen television. During weekends you will see stalls of food and tiannge/bazaar selling clothes, bags and accessories.

One of the historical landmarks. This was the site of Casa Real de Cagayan that was built in 1831. During the Spanish colony this was the house of the Spanish governor-generals. The last governor departed Cagayan around 1898 then was taken over the Aguinaldo Revolutionary Government. It was ripped down and built a new structure known before as Municipal hall and was renamed City hall when Cagayan de Oro became a city in 1950.

The City of Golden Friendship is really booming. Every where you go there is a new building construction or renovation and one of them is the Cogon Public Market which is the central market in the city. I remember, I used to buy fresh vegetables and fruits that were displayed on the sidewalks or street vending. Thanks to the Local Government that they constructed this building. Trivia: Cogon Public market is 1.5 hectares having a 4.5 hectare of floor space.

Jeepney is known to be the “King of the Philippine Roads”. It is the most common and inexpensive means of public transport. In Cagayan de Oro, jeepneys are very colorful and presented very well. They build terminals for jeepneys and buses traveling in the nearby provinces both West and East Bound. In Davao City , you will see jeepneys anywhere even in busy streets. They have small jeepneys (which are NOT that flamboyant) that have specific routes within the City and the spacious and multicolored jeepneys travel in major highways and roads. In Metro Manila, they are all over like the buses.

Time for canopy walk (sky bridge) of our boys. This bridge runs about 123 meters across and has a height of 150 meters. Once you are up there you will see the full view of the Macahambus gorge. The adventure of our boys is not complete if they will not try to rappel down. Wow! What a heart-pounding experience. You can see them holding tight to the cable.

Taken during our rafting. It feels good when you shout HIGH-5! Of course we were briefed on how to paddle and always listen to our assigned guide. Sometimes we forgot to paddle because we are more focus on the rapids. In the raft is my father, aunt, brother and his wife, my hubby, and the raft guide. They conquered 21 rapids for almost 2-1/2 hours.
