Social Issues Should Be Taboo On The Job

I don’t believe it’s wise to discuss social issues at work. I believe social issues should be resolved in private, in the privacy of one’s own home with one’s own family. It is too easy for tempers to flare at the workplace, because one person’s social issue is another person’s social disease. Not everyone is going to agree on abortion, gay rights, animal rights, the environment, social conservatism versus fiscal conservatism, or even the status of the local mayor’s race.

By keeping social issues at home instead of bringing them to work, one will find that their working hours are considerably less fraught with tension among co-workers, especially during election years. There is an exception, however. If one’s job is founded upon championing or removing a particular social issue, then by all means discuss it at work.
