After the remodeling the Cathedral was hit again by two strong earthquakes that toppled the bell tower and it remained tower less from 1880 until 1959. It was constructed again in 1870-1879. It was build with a center cross of the dome but was toppled into ruins by bombing. The cathedral was rebuilt in 1954 and was elevated into the rank of minor basilica in 1981 by Pope John Paul II.
